Study Abroad
Although not required for completion of the ID specialization, international study is an extremely rewarding experience and also an excellent way to complement your academic coursework in international development. The University of Guelph offers plenty of opportunities for study abroad and exchange, each with varying costs and arrangements. Once you are familiar with the different ways in which you can study abroad (see list below), you can start planning your international study experience. For more information about international study, also visit the Centre for International Programs (CIP) on the 3rd floor of the University Centre.
International study opportunities:
Semester Abroad Programs:
These programs, which consist of structured group experiences, are formal University of Guelph semesters conducted overseas and coordinated by a Guelph faculty member. Several ID students participate in the Latin America and India semesters (held alternating winter semesters). Other semester programs are held in Krakow, London, Nice, Paris and Shanghai.
More information on each semester abroad program can be found on the Centre for International Programs's website.
Numerical grades will appear on the student transcript for courses completed during a semester abroad program.
Exchange Programs:
Over 75 exchange programs between the University of Guelph and other universities world-wide are available. The final grades for courses taken on exchange will appear as Outstanding Pass (OP), Pass (P) or Fail (F) on the Guelph transcript.
Letter of Permission (LOP):
Students can organize their own study abroad experience at another institution through a Letter of Permission. See Study abroad through other institutions (below). Courses taken while on Letter of Permission will appear on the Guelph transcript as CRD (credits) only. No actual grade will appear. Note that the University of Guelph accepts no responsibility for students studying on LOP.
Field trip courses:
Some departments offer short field trip courses in Canada or abroad. See e.g. AGR*2500 Field Trip in International Agriculture (usually in Latin America) and GEOG*4690 Geography Field Trip (in Canada or abroad).
IDEV work/study courses:
Students can use international/local experience or research as a basis for receiving academic credit through unique individual work/study courses (IDEV*3200, IDEV*4190, IDEV* 4200). See Individual work/study courses in International Development for more information.
Study Abroad through other Institutions:
Other universities in Canada offer study abroad options that may be of interest to International Development students. Students planning to participate in such programs will need approval from the BA counselling office through a Letter of Permission and should discuss their plans with the ID advisor.
